Why I built this
I am Khmer, but for most of my life I felt like an impostor. I grew up outside Cambodia, and we spoke mostly Chinese at home, not Khmer. So the sounds were unfamiliar, and the script felt like a total mystery.
Reading Khmer felt impossible at first. No matter how often I drilled them, many letters would not stick. For a long time, I put off learning the script for “later.” That was my biggest mistake. The moment I started reading, a new world opened up: text messages, Facebook posts, street signs, menus, and subtitles. I stopped depending only on what I could catch by ear and started learning from everything around me.
Reading fixed my ear, too. Words that had sounded identical to me looked different on the page. Once I could see the difference, I could not only hear it, but finally also say it.
I built KhmerAlphabet.com so the next learner would not have to start from zero.

How many letters does the Khmer alphabet have?
Khmer has 33 consonants, but the full script is 100+ symbols: subscript consonants (the “feet”), more than 20 dependent vowels, independent vowels, diacritics, and Khmer numerals. That sounds like a lot, and it's also why a memory system beats brute-force flashcards. The series covers all of it, one book per symbol group.
Is it hard to learn how to read Khmer?
It's easier than it looks. The script feels overwhelming only when you treat every symbol as a separate puzzle. Nearly every consonant belongs to one of two sound families (the a-series and o-series), and once you know a letter's family, you know how to read the vowels attached to it. Learn the pattern first and the 100+ symbols become predictable.
What are the a-series and o-series?
Every Khmer consonant carries a built-in vowel sound: a-series consonants carry an “aw” sound, o-series consonants an “ow” sound. The same written vowel is pronounced differently depending on which family it attaches to, so knowing the family is the key to reading. In our books, a-series letters are always printed in blue and o-series in red, so your eyes learn the families automatically.
How long does it take to learn the Khmer alphabet?
With a mnemonic for every letter and 10 to 15 minutes of daily practice, most learners recognize their first letters on day one and work through the consonants in a few weeks. The color-coded families do the heavy lifting: instead of memorizing 33 separate letters, you learn one pattern and two colors.
Do I need to speak Khmer before learning the script?
No. The books are written for Khmer alphabet beginners and heritage learners alike, and every letter comes with its pronunciation in plain English comparisons, a memory hint, and real Khmer example words. If you already know some spoken Khmer, the script will connect what you hear to what you see.
What exactly do I get, and can I try it first?
